In fantasy, we can be all-powerful—invincible in conflict and irresistible in love—an omnipotent force in an imagined universe where even the laws of physics cease to apply. Imagine flying, moving mountains, traveling to the far side of the galaxy at faster than light speed. The mind can do these things without breaking a sweat. Our bodies are confined by limitations and laws on all sides, but in our imaginations, we can be free.

Imagine you have a single chance to freeze time and walk about the world as if it were a wax museum. You can do whatever you like. Just what is it you would like to do before the clock’s hand thaws?

It's no secret that many college students do not sleep enough. Academic studies, social life, part-time or full-time jobs, and relationships are often more important than sleep. Students experience even more sleep deprivation as midterm and final exams approach.

Sleep is serious business

Lack of sleep can cause these harmful side effects:
  • daytime drowsiness
  • inability to cope with stress
  • weight gain
  • poor health
  • low energy
Most important for students, sleep deprivation makes studying and learning more difficult. It also hurts the body's ability to stay healthy.

According to statistics, it is becoming increasingly rare in many countries for families to eat together. It seems that people no longer have time to enjoy a meal, let alone buy and prepare the ingredients.  Meanwhile, fast food outlets are proliferating. Further evidence of the effects of the increasing pace of life can be seen on all sides. Motorists drum their fingers impatiently at stop lights. Tempers flare in supermarket queues.
The above are all symptoms of a modern epidemic called “hurry sickness”. The term was coined by a prominent cardiologist, who noticed that all of his heart disease patients had common behavioural characteristics, the most obvious being that they were in a chronic rush. Hurry sickness has been an issue in our culture ever since but the problem is escalating in degree and intensity, leading to rudeness, short-tempered behaviour and even violence, alongside a range of physical ills.

Not long ago people believed that in the future we would work less, have more free time, and be more relaxed. But sadly this has not happened. Today we work harder, work longer hours, and are more stressed than ten years ago. We walk faster, talk faster, and sleep less than previous generations. And although we are obsessed with machines which save us time, we have less free time than our parents and grandparents had. But what is this doing to our health? People who live in cities are suffering from 'hurry sickness' - we are always trying to do more things in less time. As a result, our lives are more stressful. If we don't slow down, we won't live as long as our parents. For most people, faster doesn't mean better.

We're living faster but are we living better?

Are you a slow person or a fast person? Do you like to stay busy, or do you enjoy doing nothing sometimes? Do you prefer the highway or country roads?
We all know that the pace of life is different in different places and cultures. When we visit a place for the first time, we get a general idea of the place and what life is like there. The pace of life helps to form this general impression. The pace of life in a city, for example, is a big part of its unique atmosphere.
This isn't just true for cities and countries, however. There are also big differences in pace between individuals, even individuals within the same culture living in the same town. Next-door neighbors can experience life at completely different paces.
