You can't have everything. That may seem like a statement of the obvious, but it's surprising how many people seem to forget the fact when you're making their decisions. Something in human nature refuses to accept that universal rule. We want to believe we can have it all, if only because it makes for a pleasant fantasy. You can dream what you like, but even if you were the wealthiest person on the planet, there would be some things your money couldn't buy.

Imagine that you have discovered a magical lamp. A genie appears when you rub it and offers to grant you a single wish in return for setting it free. You can wish for anything in the world you want (with the standard wish granter's stipulation of no wishing for more wishes). What do you wish for?

Make A Wish

A child's world is rich with stories. The tales they see in movies, read in books, or that their parents and grandparents tell them take them on magical journeys. They take them to many different places, where they meet many strange and wonderful people, animals, or creatures. When we take a step back, however, it becomes clear that the stories are not quite as different from each other as they might first appear.
Fairy tales - these first magical stories told to children - contain many similar main ideas, or themes. These themes are also similar across cultures. No matter where a child is born, his fairy tales probably have characters like a poor servant girl who marries a prince, starving children who find a new home, or a young peasant boy who discovers that he is actually a lost king. In fact, the most popular theme in fairy tales involves a person rising above his or her low position in life.

Playing cards that dance through the air ... rabbits produced from a silk top hat ... a lovely assistant made to disappear in a puff of smoke. Stage magic is simple deception raised to the level of entertainment. As you watch the performance, you know you're being tricked, but no matter how hard you think about it or how closely you watch the hands, it seems you can never put your finger on the secret. But somehow the witty banter and the sleight of hand make it all fun, and you sit back and enjoy the display of baffling skill. Perhaps the most important part of the magician's act is not in the mastery of the actual techniques or the preparation of the props, but in the ability to make an audience willing to believe.

Wouldn't it be nice to have that same skill? Well, tonight is your big chance. Your audience is waiting, and the curtain is about to rise...

1. You are a stage magician, just setting off on another long tour. Tonight is opening night, and you are waiting in the wings of the stage for your act to be announced. How do you feel in the moments before your show begins?
2. Part of your act involves calling a member of the audience up on stage to help you with a trick. Whom do you call to assist you? Give the name of a person you know.
3. Despite all your years of training and experience, somehow the trick goes terribly wrong. What do you say to the person you called up to participate?
4. You're back in your dressing room after your act. How do you feel now that the show has ended?
