There are some things that are difficult to accept outright, but which we want to believe in nonetheless. Kindly fairies, mysterious ghosts, Santa Claus. The concept of heavenly angels in particular seems to capture the imagination, and few people are willing to deny the possibility that they exist. It’s comforting to think of them looking down upon us with goodwill and compassion, ready to aid us in our darkest hour of need. And what harm could possibly come from having a little faith in divine providence?
Imagine that you are an angel. As you soar through the heavens, you hear a fallen angel (or several) calling out to you. How many angels do you see, and what are they saying to you?
